Awa Odori Festival

Awa Odori is Japan’s largest dance festival, held each year from 12 to 15 August in Tokushima City on Shikoku island. The festival draws around 100,000 performers and 1.3 million spectators over four evenings, remarkable figures for a city of roughly 250,000 residents. What distinguishes it from other major Japanese summer festivals is that the dancing itself is the event: troupe after troupe of performers in straw hats and yukata weave through the streets in a step that looks deceptively simple until hundreds of people are doing it simultaneously.

The Dance

Awa Odori is a form of Bon Odori, the dance traditionally performed during the Obon midsummer festival for welcoming ancestral spirits. Over 400 years, Tokushima’s version developed its own character and music. A famous folk lyric captures its philosophy: “The dancing fool and the watching fool are both fools — if you’re going to be a fool anyway, you might as well dance.” The musicians who accompany the dancers play shamisen, taiko drums, Kane bells, and the high-pitched shinobue flute, creating a sound that carries through the city streets.

Dance groups are called ren. There are roughly 1,000 registered ren in Tokushima, ranging from elite professional troupes who train year-round to neighbourhood groups and corporate teams. Women’s style is characterised by raised arms, bent knees, and pointed toes taken in small steps; men’s style has a more aggressive energy, with high arms and a forward-leaning stomp.

Tickets and Free Viewing Areas

The main performance areas are enclosed venues (en-za) along the central parade route, where seats are available for purchase. Tickets cost approximately 1,500-2,000 yen per seat as of recent years and sell out months in advance; check the Tokushima Convention and Visitors Bureau website from January for the 2027 sale date. Significant sections of the route are also viewable for free from the footpath, though these areas fill up early. Arriving by 5pm for the 6pm start gives a reasonable chance of a good standing position.

Getting to Tokushima

From Osaka, the Nankai Ferry service operates overnight and daytime crossings to Tokushima Port (approximately 2 hours, around 1,900 yen as of 2026). Highway buses from Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto reach Tokushima in approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. From Tokyo, fly to Tokushima Awa Odori Airport (roughly 75 minutes from Haneda). Book accommodation at least four to six months in advance; Tokushima hotels sell out entirely for Awa Odori dates, and visitors frequently stay in Osaka or Kobe and travel in by day.

Tips

The festival runs from approximately 6pm to 10:30pm each evening. Wearing a yukata is welcomed and adds to the atmosphere; rental is available near the station. Carry cash for food stalls. The event goes ahead in light rain but can be partially postponed in severe weather.
