Awa Odori - Koenji

Koenji Awa Odori is the largest Awa Odori festival outside Tokushima, held on the last Saturday and Sunday of August in Koenji, a neighbourhood of west-central Tokyo served directly by the Chuo Line. Around 10,000 dancers perform across multiple street stages and approximately one million spectators attend across the two evenings, making it one of the largest street festivals in Tokyo’s calendar. The event began in 1957 when a local shopping district association introduced the Tokushima dance tradition to the neighbourhood, and it has grown substantially since then.

What to Expect

The performances begin at 5pm and run until roughly 8pm on both evenings. Multiple ren (dance troupes) rotate through the performing areas, each troupe distinguished by its costume colours and the style of its musicians. The central streets around Koenji Station — north and south exits — form the main performance circuit, with satellite stages in the covered shopping arcades (shutter gai) off the main road.

The Koenji version has a slightly looser, more urban energy than the Tokushima original. Many troupes train specifically for this event and perform with high precision; others are neighbourhood or corporate groups who emphasise participation over polish. Both styles are worth watching.

Entry and Access

There is no ticket required and no entry charge. The festival is entirely free to attend. The crowds are dense, particularly in the 6pm to 7:30pm window; arriving by 4:30pm to secure a standing position on the main route is advisable. Folding stools and step ladders are common among Japanese spectators — both are perfectly acceptable.

Koenji Station is on the JR Chuo Line, approximately 12 minutes by rapid train from Shinjuku. The station area becomes pedestrianised for the festival, and vehicle access is restricted. From central Tokyo, the Chuo Line is the simplest route; avoid driving.

Tips

The last weekend of August in Tokyo is warm and humid (typically 28-32°C in the evening). Lightweight clothing, a fan, and water are necessary. Convenience stores near the station stock drinks but can sell out of cold beverages by mid-evening; carrying a water bottle is sensible. Food stalls operate along the festival perimeter. The event proceeds in light rain, which can actually reduce crowds and improve viewing conditions.
