Hakodate Christmas Fantasy

Hakodate Christmas Fantasy runs throughout December on the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse waterfront, one of the most photographed areas of a city already noted for its scenic harbour and European-influenced architecture. The centrepiece is a large illuminated Christmas tree on the waterfront, accompanied by nightly fireworks launched from the harbour. The combination of fireworks reflected in the dark water, the lit warehouse buildings, and the cold clear air of a Hokkaido December makes this one of the most atmospheric winter events in Japan.

What to See

The main Christmas tree stands on the waterfront plaza in front of the Kanemori warehouses. The tree is lit each evening, and short fireworks displays (typically 5-10 minutes) are set off over the harbour on specific evenings throughout December — the schedule is published on the official Hakodate Christmas Fantasy website, usually from late October. Additional illuminations line the waterfront promenade and the streets of the surrounding Motomachi historic district.

The Motomachi area, with its preserved Western-style churches and consulate buildings, is particularly worth exploring after dark. The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, the Russian Orthodox Haristosu Church, and the hillside streets above the harbour are all lit and considerably less crowded than the waterfront area.

Getting to Hakodate

From Sapporo, the Hokuto limited express train runs to Hakodate in approximately 3.5 hours. From Tokyo, the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and then a local train to Hakodate takes around 4.5 hours (faster than flying when door-to-door travel is factored in). The Hakodate Tram (streetcar) provides easy access from the station to the waterfront and Motomachi, with a one-day pass available at the terminal.

Practical Tips

December in Hakodate averages around -2 to 4°C, with snowfall. Dressing appropriately — thermal layers, a proper winter coat, waterproof boots — is not optional; the harbour area is exposed to wind. The fireworks displays draw crowds that can make waterfront viewing very tight; arriving 30-40 minutes before the scheduled start secures a good position.
