Matsumoto Castle Taiko Festival

The Matsumoto Castle Taiko Festival takes place over two evenings in early August in the grounds of Matsumoto Castle — one of Japan’s twelve surviving original castles and the oldest in the country, its black-lacquered walls earning it the name “Crow Castle”. Taiko drumming groups from across Japan perform throughout the evening against the backdrop of the lit castle, which reflects in the surrounding moat. Admission is free. The festival is relatively low-key compared to the major national matsuri but offers an exceptional setting and a concentrated programme of high-quality taiko performance.

Taiko: The Tradition

Taiko (Japanese drums) encompasses a wide range of instruments and styles. Festival taiko performance typically involves large barrel drums (o-daiko) and medium drums (nagado-daiko) played by groups who train year-round. The sound carries considerably, and the combination of percussive rhythm from multiple groups in succession creates a powerful cumulative effect over the two evenings. Distinct regional styles are performed by different groups — watching several groups back-to-back reveals how varied taiko can be.

The Setting

Matsumoto Castle’s grounds open for the evening event, and the reflection of the lit black castle in the moat is the visual backdrop to every performance. The festival area is within the castle park at 4-1 Marunouchi, Matsumoto, and the main stage faces the castle walls. August evenings in Matsumoto are warm but cooler than Tokyo or Osaka due to the city’s elevation (580 metres above sea level); a light layer for later in the evening is useful. The castle park is surrounded by the moat on all sides and lit throughout the evening; standard daytime castle entry (approximately JPY 700 as of 2026) does not apply for the festival grounds, which are open without charge.

Best Time to Arrive

Performances typically begin from around 6pm and continue until 9pm. Arriving by 5:30pm lets you walk the moat path and find a position facing the castle before the main acts start. Crowds build from 6pm onward; good spots facing the stage fill within the first 30 minutes of the evening. A position slightly to the side of the main viewing area, closer to the water, gives an unobstructed view of both the stage and the castle reflection in the moat.

Getting to Matsumoto

From Tokyo (Shinjuku), the Azusa limited express train reaches Matsumoto in approximately 2.5 hours; the standard fare is around JPY 6,890 as of 2026 (reserved seat). From Nagoya, the Shinano limited express takes around 2 hours; fares start at approximately JPY 5,610. Matsumoto Station is a 15-minute walk from the castle, or a short taxi ride for around JPY 700. The city is worth a full day or overnight stay — the castle and the adjacent Nawate-dori and Nakamachi craft streets are the main draws. August is peak summer season; book accommodation in advance.
