Miyajima Water Fireworks Festival 2026

The Miyajima Water Fireworks Festival takes place on 1 August each year above the water around Itsukushima Shrine, with fireworks launched from boats in the channel between Miyajima island and the mainland. The display lasts approximately one hour and reflects off the still water in front of the shrine’s iconic orange torii gate, which sits in the sea at high tide. This combination of fireworks, water reflections, and one of Japan’s most recognisable landmarks creates what is regularly described as among the most beautiful fireworks settings in the country.

Viewing Positions

On Miyajima island — the waterfront promenade directly in front of the shrine offers the closest views, with fireworks launching from directly offshore. This area fills from the afternoon and is extremely crowded by evening. The best positions on the island are between Omotesando shopping street and the shrine approach, facing the torii.

From the Hiroshima mainland — Miyajimaguchi waterfront and the JR Miyajimaguchi ferry terminal on the mainland offer a wider-angle view with the island and fireworks in the same frame. These positions are less crowded than the island itself and can be easier to reach and leave.

From a ferry or chartered boat — watching from the water provides a genuinely different perspective. Regular JR and Matsudai ferries continue to operate during the event; the short crossing (10 minutes) can coincide with parts of the display. Some visitors deliberately time a crossing to catch fireworks from the boat.

Ferry Times, Costs, and Access

Regular JR ferries and Matsudai ferries run between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima throughout the evening. The JR ferry crossing takes approximately 10 minutes and costs around JPY 200 as of 2026 (free with a JR Pass). Miyajimaguchi is accessible from Hiroshima Station on the JR Sanyo Line (approximately 25 minutes, around JPY 410). Ferries become very crowded during the festival; expect queues of up to 45 minutes for the return crossing after the display ends. Alternatively, ferry earlier in the day, spend the afternoon on the island, watch the fireworks, and return on a late ferry.

Miyajima charges a visitor landing levy of approximately JPY 100 as of 2026, collected at the ferry terminal on the island. Itsukushima Shrine charges approximately JPY 300 for inner precinct entry. The shrine and floating torii are at their most photogenic at high tide; check tide tables for 1 August before planning your arrival on the island.

Best Time to Arrive on the Island

The fireworks display typically begins at 7:30pm and lasts around one hour. Arriving on the island by 4pm gives time to walk the shrine approach, eat at one of the restaurants along Omotesando before they fill, and secure a position on the waterfront by 6:30pm. The promenade directly in front of the shrine is the premium viewing spot; it fills from around 5pm on festival day. For mainland viewing at Miyajimaguchi, arriving by 6:30pm is generally sufficient to find a good position on the waterfront facing the island.
