Nada no Kenka Matsuri (Fighting Festival)

Nada no Kenka Matsuri (Fighting Festival) is held every year on 14 and 15 October at Matsubara Hachiman Shrine in the Nada district of Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture. It is described by many Japanese as the most intense and physically demanding of all autumn festivals: three enormous portable shrines (yatai) are deliberately rammed into each other, reducing them progressively to splinters, while the teams of men carrying them compete to demonstrate their district’s strength and honour to the shrine deity. Injuries among participants are not uncommon. Around 100,000 spectators attend across the two days.

What Happens

The festival uses two types of portable shrine. The mikoshi are sacred portable sanctuaries that carry the shrine deity; these are processed with care and not involved in the fighting. The yatai are large float-like structures mounted on poles and carried on the shoulders of teams of men from each of the seven participating districts (shichigo). It is the yatai that are crashed together in the kenka (fighting) phase of the festival.

The fighting takes place within a roped enclosure at the shrine grounds. Teams from different districts carry their yatai at a run and crash them together on the shoulder of their neighbours’ structure. As the day progresses, the yatai accumulate damage — broken lacquer, splintered wood, torn decorations. By the end of the festival, the structures are typically severely damaged. This is considered honourable rather than regrettable: the destruction demonstrates the vigour of the participants’ devotion.

Festival Schedule

The main events on 15 October (the formal festival day) begin from around 1pm. The kenka confrontations happen throughout the afternoon in the shrine precincts. The morning of 14 October features processions and preliminary ceremonies. Viewing is free but the enclosure area around the fighting becomes very crowded; arrive by noon to secure a position with a clear sightline.

Getting There

Matsubara Hachiman Shrine is in the Nada area of Himeji, approximately 3 kilometres east of Himeji Station. Local buses run from Himeji Station during the festival; the journey takes about 10 minutes.
