Nara Tokae Lantern Festival 2026

The Nara Tokae Lantern Festival runs for ten evenings in early August, when around 7,000 stone lanterns throughout Nara Park and the approach to Kasuga Taisha Shrine are lit by candle each evening from 6:30pm to 9pm. The lanterns — granite structures that line the paths and gates of Kasuga Taisha — are a permanent feature of the park; most were donated by feudal lords over the shrine’s long history. On two nights each year during Setsubun (February) and for Tokae in August, they are all lit simultaneously, transforming the park into a completely different place from its daytime character.

What to See

The illuminated path leading from Nara Park up the wooded hillside to Kasuga Taisha is the centrepiece of the event. The stone lanterns line both sides of the gravel path through the forest, and the effect in candlelight — combined with the occasional appearance of Nara’s deer (around 1,200 animals live freely in the park) moving through the lit area — is genuinely distinctive. Many of the deer settle in the park at dusk and are calmer in the evening than during the busy daytime hours.

Todai-ji, the Great Buddha Hall, is also illuminated during Tokae, and the approach along Nandaimon (the Great South Gate) is separately worth walking in the evening light.

Entry and Practical Information

Walking through Nara Park is free at all times. Kasuga Taisha shrine grounds have daytime entry charges (approximately JPY 500 as of 2026 for the inner precinct) but the outer park paths and stone lantern routes along the main approach are accessible without a ticket during Tokae. Todai-ji’s main hall (Daibutsuden) charges approximately JPY 600 entry during regular hours; check whether evening access during Tokae requires a separate ticket on the official Todai-ji website. Bring insect repellent — August evenings in Nara are warm and mosquitoes are active in the wooded park areas around Kasuga Taisha.

Best Time to Arrive

The lanterns light at 6:30pm. Arriving by 5:30pm is advisable: it allows time to walk the deer park in the fading light, find a position along the Kasuga Taisha approach before the crowds build, and eat in the Higashimuki or Naramachi restaurant areas nearby before the main evening programme. The path to Kasuga Taisha becomes congested from around 7pm; entering from the Nandaimon side of the park and walking up through the forest lantern route avoids the worst of the early crowd.

Getting to Nara

Nara is easily reached from Osaka (Kintetsu Nara Line from Namba, approximately 35 minutes by express, fares from around JPY 680 as of 2026), Kyoto (Kintetsu from Kyoto Station, approximately 45 minutes and approximately JPY 760, or JR Nara Line approximately 45 minutes on a local service), and Kobe (approximately 1 hour via Osaka).
