Domestic air travel across western Japan and Kyushu is facing significant disruption on 14 May 2026. A combined 118 flight delays and 20 cancellations have been recorded across Osaka International Airport (Itami), Kagoshima Airport, and Yakushima Airport, affecting passengers on routes to Tokyo Haneda, Fukuoka, and Sapporo.

Scale of the Disruptions

Osaka Itami is bearing the heaviest load: 88 delays and 8 cancellations have been logged across its scheduled domestic services, making this one of the larger single-airport disruption events at Itami in recent months. Kagoshima Airport and Yakushima Airport together account for the remaining delays and cancellations, with Yakushima’s smaller capacity meaning even a handful of affected flights has an outsized impact on the island’s air links.

Japan Airlines, ANA, and Peach Aviation all have multiple affected services. Passengers at Itami have reported packed departure lounges, frequent gate changes, and rolling revisions to estimated departure times throughout the day, though most services have eventually been dispatched.

Affected Routes

The primary disrupted corridors are:

  • Osaka Itami to Tokyo Haneda — the busiest domestic route in Japan by passenger volume
  • Kagoshima to Fukuoka and Sapporo — key intra-Kyushu and long-haul domestic connections
  • Yakushima to Kagoshima — the main link serving the island’s visitors

Elevated post-Golden Week domestic travel demand and operational knock-on effects across the network are contributing factors. The Kansai and Kyushu regions are both seeing high passenger volumes as the holiday period winds down.

What to Do If You Are Affected

Airlines are required to offer rebooking at no additional charge when a delay or cancellation is attributable to operational reasons. Contact your carrier at the airport or via their app as soon as possible to secure an alternative service, since later flights on popular routes fill quickly.

If your delay exceeds the threshold specified in your travel insurance policy, keep receipts for any meals and accommodation you purchase — most policies reimburse these costs above a minimum delay period. Our Japan travel insurance guide explains what to look for in a policy before you travel.

For anyone with flexibility, shinkansen services between Osaka and Tokyo are operating normally and are not affected by the airport disruptions. If your final destination is within reach of the rail network, the bullet train is a reliable fallback for onward travel today.

We will update this article if the disruptions extend into tomorrow’s schedule. For live status on specific flights, check your airline’s app or the airport’s official flight information boards.
